resurrection ritual (celebration of life force) - original oil painting
resurrection ritual (celebration of life force)
32" x 40"
oil, slate and mica on canvas
2024
when i was researching the history of cicadas i found that they were cherished by the people of the Han dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE)— they were symbols of rebirth and immortality. as a part of funeral rituals, they placed delicately carved jade cicadas (called tongue amulets) on the tongues of corpses to encourage the reincarnation of their energy and the preservation of their body.
this painting is a celebration of life force— ancient energies, histories and experiences swirling, dancing, joining and recycling into new. it is dark but glowing, mourning but rejoicing, enigmatic but evident. a harmonious evocation, regeneration and reflection on life.
